What the hell is Steampunk?

Steampunkery

What is Steampunk?

Well to me visually -John Wayne meets Nicola Tesla in a Brothel.

K. W Jeter has been linked with the beginning of this craze.
When asked to describe his works to Locus Magazine in the late 1980's, Jeter replied -

Prior to Jeter coining 'Steampunk', the term 'Cyberpunk' existed.
Cyberpunk is a sub genre of Science Fiction
'Cyber' relating to- Cybernetics
Cybernetics is the scientific study of how people, animals, and machines control and communicate information.'Punk' relating to- Anarchistic, antisocial rebellious behaviour.
Anti-authoritarian.
The term Punk in this case was derived from the meaning of Punk as being rotten or bad.
The antisocial behaviour and apparent disdain for authority of those in the 1970's and early 80's who listened to bands like The Sex Pistols and the culture behind that era that made up the Punk Rock culture.

In short Cyberpunk refers to Anarchy with Machines ..Robo-hooligans?

Steampunk relates to the era of Steam Power. Steam Engines - The thing that many people can probably picture when they think of steam engines :

Yet it deals with futuristic type things.. so mix that with...

With me so far?

Steampunk is not just based on machines and societal unrest.
One of the major parts of the Steampunk culture is the fashion.

The fashion mixes old school western ...we are talking Billy The kid or John Wayne - with - The Victorian era.
The fashion is quite elaborate and very interesting.
Well.. most of the time it is elaborate.. there are a few that think less is more when it comes to dressing up a female..
That would be the Brothel part of my visual depiction.

 Accessories seem to be important.
They can be something like Goggles, or Gas Masks (I have no idea how to explain the gas masks.. other than anarchy and societal unrest can lead to bad things?)

Jewelry tends to have gears and watch parts mixed with other industrial types of things.
Old and new go well together when creating jewelry.

Clocks tend to be found in a lot of the art, tattoos, and patterns tied to Steampunk.
The clocks are mechanical, no batteries and no plugs.

Why is it so interesting?
I have no idea...but it is!
Maybe it's the rugged hands on mechanical nature of it?
The alluring and demure Victorian side of it?

Or maybe the idea of being able to mix the two.

To me it seems more believable - the weirdo gadgets tend to look more possible then ...well the iphone.
You can follow the movements of a mechanical gizmo...you can't.. well I can't follow jack when it comes to current technology.. It works because..hey look it works!..
That is all I can say.
